SSA student Jasmine DeBruce honored for Junior Achievement by NexTier Bank

Jasmine DeBruce, a senior at Shady Side Academy in Penn Hills, has been named in the inaugural class of Junior Achievement 18 Under Eighteen of Western PA presented by NexTier Bank. The event celebrates 18 exceptional students who are defining their generation through their entrepreneurial spirit, leadership and service to their communities.

“These wonderful kids are entrepreneurs, social workers, scientists, entertainers and more,” said Patrice Matamoros, Western PA’s president of Junior Achievement. “They are the innovators, progressors and providers of hope who will continue to propel and keep our field moving forward. JA is honored and excited to recognize these young people who make me an optimist for a bright future.”

DeBruce is an active advocate of social justice. At SSA, she serves as president of the Senior School Black Student Union, and she previously started the Black Student Union at SSA Middle School.

DeBruce also created the Black Scholar Society, an organization dedicated to building a network for future black leaders in Pennsylvania and uplifting black youth throughout the region by providing them with opportunities to develop their resumes, knowledge, and experience. She hopes to turn the organization into a non-profit. DeBruce plans to pursue a law degree and find internships on Capitol Hill and continue her focus on social justice issues.

DeBruce said, “Being recognized as a Junior Achievement honoree adds to my general enthusiasm for broadening my social justice initiatives by using the platforms provided to me as a result of this opportunity, along with networking with community leaders.” have contributed.” “I am deeply grateful for Junior’s achievement and look forward to working with him in the near and distant future.”

The 18 under eighteen category of 2022 represents a respected and diverse cross-section of the region, aged 10 to 18.

The honor will be celebrated on February 22 at 7 p.m. at the National Aviary on Pittsburgh’s North Side. In addition, JA 18 is working to provide students with additional educational and leadership opportunities.
